The Cinematography

Jarin Blaschke built Nosferatu entirely around period-accurate light sources — candles, oil lamps, fireplaces, and whatever grey daylight filters through heavy curtains. The palette is severely restricted: deep browns, sepias, and ochres dominate, with blacks that feel like actual darkness rather than underexposure. Blaschke avoids any modern light quality, giving every frame the texture of a daguerreotype come to life. The Count Orlok sequences push further into shadow than almost any mainstream film dares. Fog is used not as atmosphere but as a light modifier, diffusing already-dim sources into something barely perceptible. For Fujifilm, this demands maximum shadow lifting with Nostalgic Neg while keeping the overall exposure deliberately dark.
